Develop Training Sessions Through Functional
Drills,
Phase of Plays and Small Sided Games
Interview with Richard Seedhouse + 6 Page SAMPLE Below |
Dear Fellow Coach,
Knowing what you need to coach and how to progress your sessions is crucial to developing your team technically and tactically no matter of age or level.
Richard Seedhouse is the author of the new book "Coaching The Coach 2" and I interviewed him which I think you will find very interesting:
Why did you write this sequel to Coaching the Coach? |
After the massive success of Coaching the Coach and thousands of sales worldwide I started to get coaches of level 2 and UEFA B asking for a second book. They wanted more information, more knowledge; they had a thirst for more understanding of how they could continue to improve their coaching. I am only sorry it has taken another 5 years to write. |
What did they want to see in Coaching the Coach 2? |
Many coaches commented how easy it was to read “Coaching the Coach” and how the question and answer style of educating the reader helped them understand what was being said. So they wanted a second book written in the same style but taking them to the next level of coaching.
I was asked for simple coaching points for many techniques and then how and when to use them, coupled with clear examples and explanations of how to manipulate and change drills or progress practices to suit delivery of the skills and techniques being coached.
Coach’s also asked why and how to use different coaching tools like small sided games, functional drills and phase of plays and how they can all be linked and used together. |
So what do you think about small sided games and why are they included? |
It’s a great environment for players to develop their own solutions to problems on the pitch, but coaches also need to know how to use them, if you want to coach or promote passing why have small sided games with goals at each end?
It's simply manipulating the game or drill to suit your coaching topic, for example take away the goals and ask the players to make six passes to score |
Why phase of plays? |
In the book we try to break down the barrier or fear of coaching a phase of plays, we take the phase of play back to its roots which is in fact embedded in a simple technical drill, then we can add or develop it through using a functional practice and then finally back up again into the phase of play.
This hopefully gives the coach a full understanding of all the coaching points, when and where to use them and more importantly what to look for. We simply need more coach education! |
What type of coaches is “Coaching The Coach 2” for? |
Coaching The Coach 2 was developed for any coach with a question. How can i develop what I have learnt on my Level 1, Level 2 or UEFA B coaching licence, how do I utilise this information to improve my players.
The book grew out of these questions being asked of me by fellow coaches and as they continued I simply wrote down the answers and included them in the book.
I can honestly say that now any football coach who wants to learn more, see something differently, try another way, think, understand and generally educate themselves to improve the way they coach will find something within the book.
After all it is you the coaches and your questions that have created the book! |
How will coaches benefit from Coaching The Coach 2 |
Coaching the Coach 2 will give the coach more confidence to deliver and try new things. The aim is to give the coach knowledge and understanding of drill progression which enables them to take the drills, functional practices, phase of plays and small sided games they are shown or they find and use them in a way that really benefits and more importantly suits the requirements and needs of the players being coached. |
