How Jose Mourinho Attacking
Sessions Can Help You...

Full Interview with the Author and Coach;
Michail Tsokaktsidis + 5 Sample Practices Below
Dear Fellow Coach,

Michail’s book "Jose Mourinho Attacking Sessions" teaches you how one of the most successful coaches in the world prepares his team in the attacking phase as well as the transition from defence to attack.

You can work step-by-step on specialised drills and sessions. This includes content on how to train for certain game situations and tactical problems, and I interviewed him which I think you will find very interesting:

Interview with Author
1. Why did you decide to create this book?
I wanted to write a book with different content from that which is available at the moment. This book focuses on exactly what is needed with analysis of how Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid team performed on the pitch and also shows you how it can be achieved in practice.

I firmly believe that the way in which a team scores goals shows you how that team works in their training sessions. This is also true when you look at it in the opposite way as people analyse goals conceded to reveal defensive weaknesses they need to work on in training. This is why I have produced content which provides the best of both worlds, with analysis of the goals and full training sessions.
2. What type of coaches is ‘Jose Mourinho Attacking Sessions’ for?
Jose Mourinho Attacking Sessions can be used by all coaches at all levels, but especially to those who work with under 14’s up to the top professional level. This book is for coaches who want to get ideas to improve their thinking and the way that they work, making the most of functional, realistic and effective training.
3. Why did you choose Real Madrid’s 2011-2012 team to analyse above all other teams?
Because it was a great year for Real Madrid where they won the championship despite having to tackle perhaps the best team of all time (Barcelona). It was a very productive year which grew from a coaching methodology that has been at the heart of how a team prepares regularly (tactically) in such a way so that you can find solutions to different problems that are regularly caused by opponents.
4. How will coaches benefit from ‘Jose Mourinho Attacking Sessions’?

First, you can see plainly how one of the most successful coaches in the world prepares his team to find solutions in the attacking phase as well as the transition from defence to attack. Secondly and most importantly, you can work step by step on specialised drills and sessions. This includes content on how to train for certain game situations and tactical problems.

5. This book is based on the 4-2-3-1 formation, can it also be applied to other formations?

Of course, every coach no matter what formation they want to use for their team can adapt the content of the exercises simply by changing it to suit their formation. What matters most is the idea, the content and the objective of the exercise.

6. This book includes analysis and sessions, what is the advantage of this?

It is the ideal combination. Some books have only analysis of game situations and some others just contain drills/practices, however they may be too general and do not provide enough information as to where, when and how to use it.

With this content the coaches can see and understand how a great team or top coach achieves their results within certain phases of the game and after training his players with specific drills/sessions, the answers to when, where and how can be answered fully.

7. Your sessions are built on progressions from Phases of Play to Small Sided Games, why is this the best way to coach a team?

Progressing alone is a basic principle of coaching. With this specific method the book’s practices are much easier for coaches and players of all levels to see, understand and ultimately achieve the desired goal.

8. There is an emphasis in the book on the Transition phase, how important is this phase?

I believe that in modern football the transition phase is probably the most important part of the game and largely decides the winner of a match. Depending how effective a team is in the transition phase will determine if they are a good, a very good or an excellent team.

9. Is Jose Mourinho the best at coaching his players for the Transition phase?

Jose Mourinho’s teams always produce (especially in his 2nd year) fast and efficient play both in the transition from defence to attack and in the transition from attack to defence. In this particular year Real were by far the best team in Europe in the transition from defence to attack.

Guardiola in his first 3 years at Barcelona had the best negative transition in the world, while the last 2 years Jurgen Klopp has taken hold on the positive transition. But overall (negative and positive transition) and over time with what he has done with different teams, Mourinho is probably the best.

10. How important is it to prepare to play against both high and low defensive lines?

I believe that the key to success for a successful team is to be prepared in such a way to be able to find solutions and be flexible and effective against any tactical problems caused by the opposition.

For this reason you should be prepared to face opponents who will want to defend in the high, medium or low zone as well as to be properly prepared for how to act in the transition from defence to attack when the ball is won in the low, medium or high zone (the same for the defensive phase and for the transition from attack to defence).

Every team should also try to exploit their our own strong points (individual or as a team) in relation to the opponent's formation and weaknesses.

    - UEFA 'A' coaching licence

    - Bachelor Degree in Physical Education, specialising in Soccer Conditioning.

I played for 10 years as a professional at all levels of Greek football for the following teams: Doxa Dramas, Iltex Likoi (WOLVES), Agrotikos Asteras, Ethnikos K., Pandramaikos and Olimpiakos Volou. During my career I won 6 championships with 5 different teams.

At the age of 29 I stopped playing and completed my studies in fitness conditioning and football coaching. I was also a student of the UEFA coaching schools (H.F.F in Greece) and I am a fully certified UEFA A’ licence coach.

I started my coaching career in youth football for 3 years and for the last 4 years I have been a head coach in 3 different semi-professional teams in Greece (winning 2 championships). Football is my main focus in life and I have a deep passion for coaching. From very early I was interested in studying training methods, as well as analysing how they are successfully applied (in all phases of the game).

I love to learn from the great and successful teams who help to evolve the game. For my first book I wanted to use my skills to create great content for coaches all over the world to improve their training sessions. I decided to analyse a team coached by one of the most successful coaches in the last 10 years, Jose Mourinho.

I think this is a book which provides content that has not been produced before. We have combined a comprehensive analysis of the phases of play which lead to goals with training exercises that can be used for coaches to train the 4-2-3-1.
