Tactical Periodization - A Proven Successful Training Model

Learn the Tactical Periodization Method used by some of the World's Top Coaches

Hi Coach,

This groundbreaking book written by Juan Luis Delgado Bordonau PhD and José Alberto Mendez Villanueva PhD is a complete blueprint for Tactical Periodization, providing coaches with the tools to organise the whole football training process - from one specific training practice, to full season planning.

Tactical Periodization is a proven successful football coaching method. All training is driven by tactical training. It allows you the coach, to improve all other attributes (technical, conditioning and decision making) at the same time, within every single tactical practice.

The Benefits of Tactical Periodization:

  • Improve all attributes (technical, conditioning & decision making) in every tactical practice
  • Accelerate your players' tactical understanding of their positional roles & responsibilities
  • Players will react quicker, be sharper, and make better decisions in all tactical situations

The "Game Model" guides the entire training process. Training must “model” the game through specific practices (specificity) that include all the tactical game principles designed by the coach. You will learn the principle of performance stabilisation, so you can maintain your team’s high performance levels throughout a full season.

    Jose Mourinho

“For me, training means training in specificity, creating practices that allow me to enhance my principles of play.”

Many other top coaches (Pep Guardiola among them) have adopted part of these Tactical Periodization principles, building their training method around the development of a game model and its principles, using the tactical dimension to lead their training.

    This book includes:

    • The background and development of Tactical Periodization
    • The Methodological Principles
    • The Game Model (specificity)
    • Tactical Organisation in the 4 Phases of the Game

    • Reorganising into Defensive Block Positions
    • Pressing as a Collective Unit + Fast Break Attack

Vitor Frade "The Father of Tactical Periodization"
    Vitor Frade

Manuel da Costa (Vitor) Frade is the creator of Tactical Periodization. He is known in Portugal, Brazil and Spain as one of the world's greatest experts and thinkers when it comes to football methodologies.

Vitor revolutionised football coaching by combining all phases of the game, making sure that the tactical dimension is at the forefront of every training session - there is no need for specific physical, tactical or technical training.

The "Game Model" guides the entire training process.

This philosophy is based around getting the players to think, learn and develop, to make the right decisions based on the coach's style of play. This leads to performance stabilisation throughout the season.

Marcelo Bielsa Tactical Analysis + Session:

Receiving in Behind the Midfield Line + Creating and Exploiting a 3 v 2 Numerical Advantage

    Hi Coach,

Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino are both disciples of Bielsa's methods. Read the article here on Sky Sports News

A key element of Marcelo Bielsa's tactics when building up play against high pressing teams is to create a 3 v 2 situation near the sideline. The numerical advantage creates the option to move the ball to the free player.

This can be done through intelligent positioning, good decision making and accurate passing.

Marcelo Bielsa's Influence on Top Coaches
    Pep Guardiola

    Pep Guardiola

"My admiration for Marcelo Bielsa is huge because he makes the players much, much better.

"Still, I didn't meet one guy, a former player from Marcelo Bielsa who speaks badly about him. They are grateful for his influence on their careers in football.

"He helped me a lot with his advice. Whenever I speak with him, I always feel like he wants to help me.

"It is important for me to say this about Marcelo because it doesn't matter how many titles he had in his career. We are judged by that – how much success we have, how many titles we have won. But that is much less influential than how he has influenced football and his football players.

"That is why, for me, he is the best coach in the world.

    Mauricio Pochettino

"He is like my football father...

"We are a generation of coaches who were his disciples. How he feels football, the passion he has for football, I think we all took that from him.

I think this book can be considered a prize for the years of work done by professionals working in the Football Schools of the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation). All of them are very good coaches, but what is more important in my point of view, is that they are great educators.

I have the opportunity to see the work that is done with the children in the schools of the RFEF live. I am proud to observe the treatment of the students. As well as teaching them all the technical skills they need and how to position themselves on the pitch, they are instilled in the values of fellowship, teamwork, discipline, and respect for their coach, teammates and opponents.

I am the Director of the School of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (Spanish Football Federation). For many years, I have had the great dream of creating a book to include all of our football practices we use at the Spanish Football Federation. It has not been an easy task, because in it I wanted to capture the work of many coaches who, with love and dedication, give every day, so that the children can progress and learn in the best way possible.

The Football School of the Spanish Federation currently has more than 800 students aged between 4 and 15 years old. We take into account the application of the methodology of learning by age, so that the child ends up being an athlete and a professional football player.

Throughout the season, we practice these exact types of activities, because we consider it fundamental that the children learn and understand the practices perfectly, and little by little, work on variations that make them more difficult, forcing them to strive for the perfect execution.

One hundred percent of the work done today, is undoubtedly one of the great and most profitable changes of all these years in football. Developing players need to train while always using the ball - with it the work will always be much better and more fruitful. This is my best advice, to always have players using a ball in your sessions from beginning to end, for all practices.
